JAMES GRIEVE DUAL PURPOSE (EATING & COOKING) APPLE TREE-Malus domestica JAMES GRIEVE

The James Grieve Apple tree hailed from north of the border in Edinburgh in 1893 making it particularly suitable for growing in cooler climates. An attractive apple with red flushed pale green colouring with diverse flavours. If picked early it can be pleasant but sharp to taste making it ideal for cooking it also retains its shape well, if left until October the flavour of the James Grieve mellows producing a refreshing sweet taste which also makes it a favourite for juicing. This Apple tree was given the RHS Award of Merit in 1897 and a First Class Certificate in 1906. The James Grieve is a popular and reliable Apple tree its only failing that it tends to bruise easily and therefore needs careful handling when picking in September/October.

POLLINATION GROUP 3: James Grieve is partially self fertile but will produce heavier crops if planted with another Apple tree variety from groups 2, 3 or 4 (more details)-link to pollination at top of fruit page.

We supply James Grieve as one year old (maiden)-link to plant size guide bare rooted Apple trees grafted onto an MM106 rootstock. This will make a spreading tree producing heavy crops even in colder areas with an ultimate height of approximately 10-12ft.

We recommend using Bone Meal and Rootgrow to give your new Apple tree a good start, these can be found on the left hand menu.
