This hardy old English variety is a compact tree with dense twiggy branches. Although it is not a heavy cropper the radiant dark blue fruits it does produce are extremely sharp to eat straight from the tree but are absolutely delicious when cooked.

SHROPSHIRE PRUNE DAMSON TREE (CULINARY) PLUM TREE-Prunus domestica SHROPSHIRE PRUNE DAMSON

The parentage of the Shropshire Prune Damson is unknown but is known to have been in circulation since the mid 1600’s originating we assume in the county after which it was named. The skin is a dark blue in colour with a strong bloom. A truly memorable flavoured fruit the Shropshire Prune is usually too sharp to eat when fresh from the Damson tree however when cooked the taste is quite exceptional making it perfect for jams or using with savoury dishes. Harvesting of the Shropshire Prune takes places from mid September onwards. Having grown in this country for centuries they have acclimatised to the damp British weather and will tolerate being grown in cooler Northern areas and damper spots in the garden although not too wet.

POLLINATION: The Shropshire Prune Damson tree is self fertile but as with most self fertile fruits will produce heavier more sustainable crops if planted with other varieties.

We supply Shropshire Prune Damson Tree as one year old (maiden)-link to plant size guide bare rooted Damson trees grafted onto St Julian A rootstock. This will make a compact Damson tree with an ultimate height of approximately 10-12ft. Also has the added benefit of being happy in damp areas.

We recommend using Bone Meal and Rootgrow to give your new Damson tree a good start, these can be found on the left hand menu.Order any mix or combination of fruit trees in same size to qualify for multibuy discounts.
