Fruit - Trees
The production of young fruit plants is an extremely specialised business, we are therefore delighted to be able to source all our fruit stocks from a leading UK fruit nursery and can now offer our customers a comprehensive range of plants with complete confidence. All our plants are grown in the Uk, certified virus free and ministry inspected where appropriate. All plants are supplied bare rooted unless stated otherwise.
ROOTSTOCKS: All our tree fruits are grown on semi-dwarfing stocks to contol growth and make trees of an ideal size for average gardens. Plant 12-15ft apart. MM106 A versatile rootstock thriving on a wide range of soils producing mature trees of 10-12ft in height and width. All our Apples are grafted onto this stock.
QUINCE A/QUINCE C: More vigorous/less vigorous. The vigour of these rootstocks is used to temper the vigour of the variety, both will therefore mature trees of a similar size to MM106.
ST JULIEN A: Widely used reliable rootstock, again producing trees of 10-12ft.
GISELA: 5 More dwarfing rootstock for Cherries, 8-10ft when mature.
COLT: Less dwarfing Cherry rootstock, 12-15ft. We may occasionally substitute other rootstocks of a similar nature should any ot the above become unavailable.
MAIDEN TREES: Most of our fruiting trees are offered in this popular form. This is a 1 year old, unpruned tree that may be trained into any shape required.
APPLES: All supplied as Maidens, rootstock MM106
POLLINATION: To ensure a good crop it is necessary to plant varieties together that will flower at a similar time and so pollinate each other. For ease of reference apples are grouped by flowering time, to choose a suitable pollinator simply select a variety of the same or adjacent group for example an apple in Group 2 will pollinate another in Groups 1, 2 or 3. Some varities are self fertile (sf) but will produce better crops with suitable pollinators. Tiploid varieties (T) require two other varieties for best results, they produce very little pollen and are therefore unsuitable for pollinating other varieties.
