Common Alder
ALDER,COMMON,ALNUS GLUTINOSA-HEDGING AND YOUNG TREES
The Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) is a fast growing deciduous native tree of medium size with a bushy habit of growth, especially when young.
Like all other Alders (Link-Alder), the common Alder will thrive on virtually any site but is particularly useful for poor soil and in damp or waterlogged conditions where few other trees will grow. Alder trees are pioneer colonising plants widely used for land reclamation and to prevent soil erosion. They are very easy to establish and associate with soil bacteria to fix nitrogen. The dense leaf canopy will improve the humus content of soil as the fallen leaves decompose.
The Common Alder tree produces elongated yellow-brown male catkins in early spring, the female flowers are shorter and become woody cones containing the seeds. These are not usually dispersed from the cones until late winter or spring and are very popular with small birds.
The latin ‘glutinosa’ refers to the slightly sticky resinous gum that coats the buds and young leaves. These open to rich shiny deep green colour and are retained long into the autumn after the leaves of many deciduous trees have changed colour and fallen.
The Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) is therefore an excellent choice for deciduous windbreaks and landscape effect. Common Alder supports a wide variety of wildlife but very few pests and diseases that are detrimental to crops.
The Common Alder is widely used for coppicing, in the past the wood was extensively used in the north of England for the manufacture of clogs. The wood is very durable underwater and was used for piles, to smoke fish and provided excellent quality charcoal for the manufacture of gunpowder.
The bushy growth of the Common Alder (Alnus glutinosa) makes this tree an excellent choice for a larger hedge screen or windbreak of 6ft upwards. We recommend planting 2ft. (60cm) apart, the ideal time for trimming a Common Alder hedge is in late summer.
All of the Alder plants on this page are suitable for hedging, or general planting, we also have larger Common Alder Standards (Link - Alder) which are suitable for planting as individual specimen trees for immediate effect.
All plants are covered by our guarantee and we will supply full cultural instructions with your order. We recommend Rootgrow and Bonemeal to help establish newly planted trees, these may found on the left hand menu.
