ALDER ITALIAN-ALNUS CORDATA-HEDGING AND YOUNG TREES

The Italian Alder ( Alnus Cordata) makes a splendid , medium or large conical tree with a bushy habit of growth, especially when young. As with all Alders(link- Alder) it fixes nitrogen by means of naturally occurring soil bacteria that associate with its roots so enriching the soil. Italian Alders are tolerant of poor dry soils including chalk but also thrive in poorly drained wet and waterlogged sites.

Italian Alder (Alnus cordata) produces ochre yellow pendulous male catkins before the leaves in early spring, the female catkins are oval and mature in autumn containing small seeds that are popular with birds. The leaves are glossy bright green and heart shaped.

Italian Alder is an excellent choice for larger hedges and windbreaks of 6ft ( 1.8m) and upwards offering protection for much of the year it is normally in leaf from April right through to December. Alders (link-Alder) are commonly used as windbreaks on farms and nurseries, they are popular with many insects and birds but harbour few pests and diseases that are detrimental to crops. Italian Alder (Alnus cordata) also makes a handsome specimen tree and has the Award of Garden Merit(trophy link) for this from the RHS.

The Alder plants on this page are ideal for hedges or general planting, we also have large Italian Alder Standards (link-), these larger trees are prefect for instant effect.

All plants are covered by our guarantee and we will supply full cultural instructions with your order. We strongly recommend Rootgrow and Bonemeal to help establish newly planted trees, these may found on the left hand menu.
