ASPEN TREE-POPULUS TREMULA –BUY POPULUS TREMULA ASPEN TREES
The Aspen tree (Populus Tremula) is one of the best native species for autumn foliage, the rich buttery yellow hues contrast perfectly with the creamy white bark. Aspen trees are easy to establish and fast growing when young ideal for screening and timber production.
While Aspen trees(Populus Tremula) are an excellent choice for wet sites these versatile trees will thrive in all except the thinnest chalky soils and have even been found on cliff faces. Aspen tree (Populus Tremula) roots can produce hundreds of suckers which in turn can lead to a veritable forest of young Aspen (Populus Tremula) trees all coming from the original mother tree, however this is unlikely to happen in a modern garden as it can take centuries to do so.
The Aspen tree (Populus Tremula) produces long elegant catkins which if female are a rather plain green in colour with small seeds, however the male catkins which appear before the leaves in spring are large and a very pretty red and grey which are then quickly followed by the scalloped shaped green leaves.
The Aspen tree (Populus Tremula) although stunning in autumn with its amazing vibrant yellow colours (seen so often in calendar illustrations and postcards sent from North America!) has branches which are a beautiful mushroom shape clearly shown when bare in winter. The leaves of the Aspen (Populus Tremula) are delicately held on long flattened stems which when moved together by the lightest of breezes quiver making a gentle clattering noise which led to the colloquial name Trembling or Quaking tree being given. These enchanting features have led to many novelists and poets to wax lyrical about its attributes.
Populus Tremula Aspen trees are a veritable haven for wildlife playing host to a wide variety of moths, butterflies, gall midges etc. The foliage of the Aspen tree (Populus Tremula) makes a tasty meal for Red Deer in Scotland and the tree itself is also a firm favourite in the food chain by beavers in Europe. Woodpeckers will often be found making nests in any holes which appear in the trunk. This wonderful species of tree also feeds insects such as the Hoverfly as its bark is rotting and dying.
Aspen trees (Populus Tremula) when grown as commercial crops are usually harvested for use in the manufacture of matches, or shredded and used as bedding for animals as it does not contain the chemicals found in many trees that may be associated with breathing problems. The leaves and leaf buds of the Aspen tree (Populus Tremula) have been used in the treatment of burns and joint pains.
