PAPER BIRCH-BETULA PAPYRIFERA, CANOE BIRCH, BUY PAPER BIRCH TREES
The Paper Birch tree (Betula Papyrifera) is a medium to large very attractive conical deciduous tree which generally grows about 1-1.5ft (30-45cm) per year to an ultimate height of 40ft (12 metres) but can in favourable soil conditions make 75ft (23 metres) or more. The leaves of the Paper Birch are dark green and slightly serrated but it is the peeling and colouring of the bark that is the primary reason Paper Birch (Canoe Birch) are a popular choice for planting in gardens and woodland areas.
Paper Birch (Betula Papyrifera) bark in young trees is an eye catching reddish brown in colour changing to the more easily recognisable papery white as the tree matures. The superb orange/yellow autumn leaf colour and yellow catkins in early spring makes Paper Birch (Betula Papyrifera) a stunning specimen tree and a popular choice for planting in swathes to make the most of the visual impact both with the trunk colour and autumnal leaf display. As the name Canoe Birch (Betula Papyrifera) indicates the bark of this tree was peeled off to provide an outer cover in the making of traditional canoes causing no harm to the tree.
Paper Birch trees will thrive in any reasonable soil but can tolerate being planted in moist conditions and along with an exceptionally strong root system makes it a perfect choice for planting along the edge of riverbanks, Paper Birch (Betula Papyrifera) is a pioneer species and easy to establish in all soils including chalk. Paper Birch trees can often be found planted in rows to create windbreaks on farmland and as such offer a home to many different types of insect and birds, their timber when harvested is only suitable for the making of products such as tooth picks, spools or will yield a prolific crop of firewood the bark of which will makes excellent tinder material.
