WILD CHERRY-PRUNUS AVIUM GEAN TREE – WILD CHERRY
Wild Cherry (Prunus Avium) are a small to medium sized very attractive native tree growing at 1-2ft (30-60cm) per year to an approximate height of 60ft (18metres). The Wild Cherry trees make a very pretty feature in any larger garden as they are an very attractive tree with a straight stem and rounded head.
The leaves of the Wild Cherry (Prunus Avium) tree are bronze when young turning to dark green then red and yellow in autumn giving a change of colour through each of the seasons. The Wild Cherry (Prunus Avium) also produces stunning white flowers in spring swiftly followed by bitter tasting colourful red fruits more suited to the palate of birds who love them than to humans who may find them distasteful.
The timber of the Wild Cherry (Prunus Avium) broadleaf tree is much in demand for the making of fine furniture and carvings. The Wild Cherry (Prunus Avium) wood has a light grain to it and is a vibrant rich warm reddish brown in colour deepening to a dark nut brown.
The Wild Cherry (Prunus Avium) grows well in all but the wettest of soils but does not like to be planted in shade. While insects are attracted to the pretty white flowers of the Wild Cherry (Prunus Avium) the berries draw a host of birds and wasps and small mammals such as squirrels who can strip the tree of its fruit within days.
