Large deciduous tree. The sweet chestnut is a stately naturalised tree with large oblong toothed leaves and masses of catkins in July which are followed by edible nuts in warm summers. A long lived and very ornamental tree that is drought resistant and frequently used for coppicing. Unsuitable for wet soils.
