A very large evergreen conifer with thick, corky red brown bark with spreading branches that become downswept with age. Pointed red-brown buds open to soft dark green leaves. An important timber tree.

These coniferous evergreens produce distinctive upright cones which are often bright shades of blue/purple when young. All have a conical habit of growth and will make very attractive specimen trees. Firs require a good moist soil for best development and so are unsuitable for chalk.
