These are the magnificent giants of the tree world, fast growing and requiring lots of space they look perfect within a parkland setting. We hope some of you with sufficient space will choose to plant one or two, or even better a small group! These trees in all likelihood, will be the tallest in your parish one day and much admired by future generations. This remarkable deciduous conifer caused something of a news sensation when the first specimen was discovered in 1941, the only prior clues as to the existence of this species had been found in fossils. Despite having only been in cultivation for around 60 years, the earliest planted specimens now exceed 130 feet in height.
The feathery foliage is a bright fresh green colour during the summer months turning to shades of tawny pink and old gold in autumn. The remarkable shaggy bark is cinnamon-brown in colour.
A highly ornamental tree that will thrive in any reasonable soil including chalk (where its size will be more restricted).
