DWARF BOX-DWARF BOX HEDGE-BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS SUFFRUTICOSA DWARF BOX

Buxus Sempervirens Suffruticosa or Dwarf Box is the smallest member of the Box(-link HGN/Box) family, often referred to as Edging Box it is the best choice for small hedges up to 12ins (30cm) in height. A Dwarf Box hedge is a classic feature seen in any formal knot gardens.

Dwarf Box produces small rounded oval leaves arranged in opposite pairs, pale green at first becoming a rich bright green as the new growth ripens. The tiny yellow flowers are insignificant, appearing in clusters during late winter and early spring.

Buxus Sempervirens Suffruticosa are very slow growing at 2-4 inches (5-10cm) per year, perfect for the smallest hedging up to 1ft.(30cm). It will slowly but surely grow up to 3ft (90cm) if left untrimmed but unless you are very patient we recommend planting Common box (-link Common box) for hedges much more than 1ft (30cm) high.

Dwarf Box hedging plants ( Buxus Sempervirens Suffruticosa) should be planted 6 inches (15cm) apart, at this spacing the individual plants of a new hedge will start to join after 2 or 3 seasons. A Dwarf Box hedge will thrive in sun or shade and in any well drained soil. Good soil preparation will help your hedge to establish quickly, compost or other organic matter should be used to improve the top spades depth of soil, Buxus Sempervirens Suffruticosa is a shallow surface rooting plant. An annual mulch in the spring will keep the fleshy roots of your Dwarf Box hedge cool during the summer months and will help maintain a bright green colour. Top dressing with a Seaweed fertiliser before you mulch is even better as it contains many nutrients including magnesium which is great for improving the foliage colour of Dwarf Box-or any other hedging shrubs.

Dwarf Box hedges are traditionally trimmed on Derby Day at the beginning of June although an annual haircut may be safely carried out at any time in early summer – or at least well before the first autumn frosts. Earlier clipping gives the new growth of Buxus Sempewrvirens Suffruticosa time to ripen before winter, greatly reducing the risk of frost damage which can give fungal spores easy access to your Dwarf Box hedge.

If at all possible use a sharp pair of hand shears when clipping your Dwarf Box hedge, these will leave fewqer brown edges that any hedge trimmer leaving a much neater finish to the job. Try and choose a cool overcast day to trim your Dwarf Box. Usually seen as a neatly clipped rectangular hedge, Dwarf box hedge plants can be clipped more loosely to produce gently undulating miniature ‘cloud’ hedging-alternatively Buxus Sempervirens Suffruticosa may be left completely untrimmed to grow into boulder shaped cushions of tiny bright green leaves.

Our Dwarf Box hedging plants are available bare rooted and pot grown giving the option of planting at any time of the year.

All plants are covered by our guarantee and we will supply full cultural instructions with your order. We strongly recommend Rootgrow and Bonemeal to help establish newly planted trees, these may found on the left hand menu.
