How to grow Box Topiary in the UK

Buxus Sempervirens commonly known as Common Box is one of the best plants for Topiary because it is perfectly suited for shaping and sculpting, lending itself extremely well to being trained into a ball shape. Common Box grows steadily at around 10cm per year increasing in all dimensions, meaning it needs little attention but is fast enough to be encouraging.

Potted Topiary shrubs can be planted any time of year with the optimum time being during the cooler months between October and April. When planting your Box Topiary, ensure the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen. Topiary trees in the UK are shade tolerant but for best results they should be planted in good soil with good drainage and in some sun.

When trimming for use as Topiary, Common Box is best trimmed a few times in the year to encourage tight and neat growth. Traditionally it is said you should trim Box Topiary on Derby Day but any time from early Summer is fine. If you are wanting to trim several ball shapes to exactly the same size, our top tip is to use a wire hoop to guide you. It is also a good idea to trim Box Topiary on a dry breezy day with a sharp tool as the cut edges will dry much quicker therefore reducing the chance of spores entering the plants.
