Compact Laurel hedging plants, Prunus laurocerasus ‘Otto Luyken’ is our smallest growing variety of Cherry Laurel that is perfectly suited to lower hedges of one metre or less in height. It also makes an excellent and very versatile ground cover plant that will grow in sun or shade.

For larger areas of ground this variety of Laurel can be trimmed to create a very formal and eye-catching ‘Laurel Lawn’.

Compact Laurel hedging plants have a slow rate of growth, from 10-20cm per year making this a very easy Laurel hedge to maintain.

Compact Laurels are worth considering as an alternative for a larger Box hedge, the smaller leaves will trim nicely to give a neat manicured effect.

Like all Cherry Laurels, ‘Otto Luyken’ has rich glossy deep green leaves that look great all year. In late spring masses of scented white flowers borne on upright candles emerging from the foliage. Later in the season the Compact Laurel plant will bear black cherry like fruits that are popular with foraging birds.

Compact Laurel hedges may be trimmed in Spring or Autumn to keep them tidy and shaped, the best time is either just before the new growth starts or at the end of the season when growth has finished, but before the onset of very cold weather.

Grow compact laurels in any soil that does not become waterlogged although if you have very thin chalky soil, we recommend the Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica) as it is more suited to these conditions, or you could take a look at our list of hedging plants that are suited to chalky soil. Prunus laurocerasus ‘Otto Luyken’ is a very good plant for more difficult conditions such as exposed sites, shady situations and even by the coast.

We also grow a wide selction of other Laurel hedging plants including types of Cherry Laurel, Bay Laurel and the colourful spotted Laurel if you need larger growing varieties, all evergreen members of the Laurel family will make excellent hedges.

All of our Compact Laurel hedging plants are pot grown, despatched to you fresh from our growing beds. Because we deliver the plants to you in their pots they may be planted at any time of year and you don’t need to plant them immediately, just keep them watered until you are ready.

When planting a new hedge, we recommend preparing the site thoroughly and removing any perennial weeds that may be present. If possible improve the soil with some garden compost or well-rotted manure. If you aren’t sure where to start we have a useful How to plant a hedge page with full details, and we will send a printed copy with your order.

At planting time it pays to add bone meal as a slow release fertiliser well mixed with the soil and rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi to give your new Compact Laurel hedge the very best start.

When planting a new Compact Laurel hedge, we recommend 3 plants per metre in a single row. For a wider and denser result, you could use 5 plants per metre in a double row.
