Green Beech

Green Beech is one of the most popular native hedges in the UK. It is classed as a deciduous plant and has light green leaves in spring that turn a darker shade of green in summer. In autumn, its leaves turn golden yellow and then copper coloured in winter.

Green Beech suit well-drained soil and prefer chalk, light loam or limestone-based soil.

Beech Purple

Purple Beech – also known as copper beech – is a popular hedge native to the UK.

In spring it has light green-purple leaves, these become deep reddish-purple in summer. In autumn, its leaves turn a shade of yellow and then copper-coloured in winter.

Purple Beech likes well-drained chalk and lime soils and grows successfully in full sunlight and even partial shade.

These hedges are available in either pot grown, root ball or bare root form. 

Thuja Plicata Atrovirens

Thuja Plicata Atrovirens – also known as Western Red Cedar – is a large evergreen conifer. It produces vibrant green, aromatic scale-like leaves with red-brown bark.

Thuja Plicata Atrovirens loves moist, well-drained chalky soil, but also survives well in clay, sand and loam soil types. It prefers full sunlight but can tolerate shade, and grows well in exposed and sheltered areas.  

English Yew

English Yew – also known as the King of Hedging – is a native evergreen conifer with dense, dark green linear leaves. In autumn its dark foliage is scattered with fleshy red fruits which are popular with many species of wildlife.   

As long as it has good drainage, English Yew is extremely versatile and can grow in all soil types from alkaline to acidic, it also tolerates full sun right through to full shade.

Golden Privet

Golden Privet is a colourful type of hedging that can be both evergreen and deciduous. It is characterised by oval-shaped green leaves with a golden yellow edging. These leaves are often retained in winter, especially if the weather is mild.

Portugal Laurel

Portugal Laurel is an evergreen hedge related to the cherry family. Native to Portugal and Spain, it was brought over to Britain in the 1600s from Madeira.

Portugal Laurel has deep-green leaves and produces white, softly scented flowers. In autumn, the flowers are followed by dark red berries.

It grows well in all soil types that are well-drained, preferring full sunlight but not adverse to partial shade.

Common Laurel

Common Laurel – also known as Cherry Laurel – has large, shiny green leaves that are roughly twice as long as they are wide.

In spring, Common Laurel produces large numbers of flower spikes with white flowers on them. These then develop into red and then black fruits that look like cherries, which is where the cherry laurel name comes from.  

Common Laurels are easily maintained by being trimmed once a year in spring or autumn.

Common Box

Common Box is an evergreen hedge with dark green, waxy leaves. Clusters of small, green-yellow flowers appear in late winter, followed by pale green to brown fruits.

Common Box can be grown in most well-drained soils and can sit in either shade or sun. Pruning Common Box in early summer allows the hedge to ripen new growth before the autumn.

Green Privet

Green Privet is a semi-evergreen hedge with pointed oval green leaves that darken as the plant ages. Creamy-white flowers, popular with insects, appear in summer.

Green Privet can grow in all soil types and can cope with full sun and full shade.

Morris Hankinson is the founder and MD of Hopes Grove Nurseries, the largest grower-retailer of hedging plants in the country. He started the business in July 1992, the day after completing his last exam of a BSc. Horticulture course at Writtle College in Essex. Morris has had a fascination and love of growing things since childhood when he was a keen exhibitor at his local Horticultural Society.
