Deciduous Azalea ‘Hotspur’
A hardy open habited variety of Azalea with the most strikingly coloured flowers of dazzling flame orange red which are produced during the months of May and June. The mid green foliage sits below open clusters of these strikingly coloured funnel shaped flowers, each with a slightly frilled edge and deeper markings in the upper petals. Foliage in the autumn is a golden yellow.
Height in 10 years – 150-180cm

Deciduous Azaleas come alive in late Spring with a profusion of brightly coloured trumpet shaped flowers in a variety of shades, few shrubs produce such a stunning display of colour. If space allows, they are at their best when planted in bold groups and with a mix of varieties. Deciduous Azaleas also produce a second show, their attractive Autumn leaf colours in hues of yellow, orange and red. All Deciduous Azaleas go well with Evergreen Azaleas and Hybrid Rhododendrons.
Although often seen planted in the dappled shade of a woodland setting, these tough plants will succeed in full sun. Deciduous Azaleas are ericaceous plants and so they should have acid soil that is well prepared and free draining. (Check to see if they are growing in nearby gardens if you aren’t sure about your soil). If your soil is alkaline, they can still be enjoyed in your garden if grown in large containers or raised beds filled with Ericaceous compost.
Deciduous Azaleas dislike cultivation immediately around them (their roots are very close to the surface) but they do benefit from a light mulch each Spring to conserve moisture. This will also discourage weeds making these plant both beautiful, and very low maintenance.
