Houttuynia Cordata Chameleon is a wonderfully attractive low-growing perennial, perfect for growing as ground cover in a bog garden or around a pond in partial or full shade and is particularly useful for adding interest in shaded areas where many other plants will not thrive. Plant with Hakonechloa grasses or with Hosta and Heuchera for wonderful mixed colour foliage in almost any area of your garden, from rockeries to water features.
Houttuynia Cordata Chameleon ground cover really is a beautiful plant that produces a striking carpet of large ivy-like brightly variegated leaves scented with orange and almost sandalwood. The young leaves start a bright green, becoming overlaid with creamy-yellow, then splashed pink-red which mature to lovely shades of crimson red, particularly around the edges – all this and flowers from June to August too!

Remarkably easy to grow, Houttuynia Cordata Chameleon (Heart leaved Houttuynia) ground cover is fully hardy and happy in pretty much any soil and in any degree of sun or shade. The leaves will appear in Spring and develop the brightest colours in full sun but still retain pretty gold-edged leaves when grown in shade. However, this incredibly versatile plant will happily grow in almost any soil condition from dry to almost boggy and in full shade through to full sun where they will give many years of low maintenance garden pleasure.
As a rough guide when planting Houttuynia Cordata Chameleon as ground cover – 4 plants per square metre is adequate with a little patience, 6 will give better coverage, and 9-12 will make a weed supressing carpet very quickly.
