Fagus Sylvatica is a hugely popular native tree and is also a firm favourite for use as hedging. Green Beech can also be found far and wide throughout European countries, they have a lifespan of hundreds of years and can reach the lofty height of 45 feet if left undisturbed. Considered in horticultural terms to be a deciduous plant it does in fact retain its leaves through autumn and winter giving similar benefits to an evergreen such as privacy.
Green Beech leaves are a very pretty light green in spring which darken through summer before turning a vibrant yellow followed by the glorious copper colour for which they are renowned. If you are looking for a hedge to plant along a roadside then this is the hedge as it will tolerate pollution from passing traffic and the salt spray when the gritting lorries are out in winter. Very popular as a wood used in furniture making and carpentry for carvings. Beech Green will flourish in any well drained soil but they will not cope with wet or heavy sites they can also cope with full sun or partial shade.

Beech Green are supplied as bare root plants when they are dormant from November until March which is the optimum planting season for purchasing economical plants particularly if larger quantities are needed. We lift these hedging plants from the fields when they are dormant in winter and sent out to you fresh within a day or two of ordering. Preparing the ground ahead of your plants arriving will minimise any risk to the plant, but if timing or planting at this time of year is an issue then perhaps looking at our potted plants would be the best way forward.
The spacing of bare root Beech plants is very much a matter of personal choice, generally we recommend 4 plants per metre for the smaller sizes and 3 per metre for larger plants. For a denser hedge, plant a double row (which increases the number of plants by 50%), you can use our plant calculator to help you work out the numbers!
