Green beech or Fagus sylvatica is the most common variety of Beech hedge, popular because of the coppery coloured brown leaves that are retained on the plants in winter giving the privacy of an evergreen hedge on a deciduous plant. Beech hedges are easy to maintain needing usually just one trim in late summer to keep the hedge looking tidy and are quite fast growing at 30-60cm a year once established.
Green beech is suitable for any soil that doesn’t become waterlogged during wet spells (where Hornbeam or Carpinus betulus will be much better suited).Beech will thrive in any soil type and being a native species Beech is a tough and hardy plant, Beech hedges seldom suffer from pests and diseases.
Pot grown Beech hedge plants are all grown here at the nursery under the watchful eye of our experienced staff and are available in an unrivalled range of sizes, selected from our growing beds and despatched out to you fresh, within a day or two of ordering.
Pot grown Beech hedge plants have a number of advantages, because there is no root disturbance they may be planted all year round (they are always in season) and they will always establish quickly at any time of year. Often they will ‘catch up’ bare rooted or root ball plants of a larger size and so are good value for money.
Planting distance is very much a matter of choice, generally planting more closely will produce a dense hedge more quickly while spacing the plants further apart will take a little longer. We have our suggested planting density per metre for each size, enter the number of metres in our plant calculator to work out how many you need (tick the box for a double row, this makes an extra dense hedge using 50% more plants)
