Berberis Maria (Berberis thunbergii Maria)

This is a compact new variety of Berberis with fantastic bright golden yellow foliage that contrasts with the young stems that are orange. The small rounded leaves are held on upright stems and turn to rich hues of orange and red during the autumn months to give a stunning display all season. Small yellow flowers appear in late spring and often develop into glossy bright red barberries that will be appreciated by the birds, this is a prickly shrub and so will offer some protection to wildlife in your garden.

Because of its bright yellow foliage colour, Berberis Maria has a lot of potential in the garden, use this bushy dwarf shrub to bring long lasting colour to flower beds and borders, it makes a great contrast with other plants and especially those with dark leaves or flowers, this is also a great plant for container giving interest all through the season.

With its naturally upright habit (its similar to Berberis Helmond Pillar) Berberis Maria also has great potential as a small, neat decorative hedge, by using 3 plants per metre a hedge of 50-80cm or so could be maintained to create really eye catching small edging or hedge, perhaps combined with other purple varieties of Berberis for contrast.

Berberis thunbergii Maria is a low maintenance shrub, pruning or trimming to maintain shape is best carried out in late winter or early spring.

How to grow Berberis Maria
