Caryopteris (also known as Bluebeard) are one of the best shrubs for autumn colour coming into their own from August onwards with a superb display of flowers well into the Autumn.

Caryopteris Grand Bleu is a new dwarf variety attaining no more than 80cm in height when fully mature, the bright blue flowers are especially large, held on strong upright stems that dont flop around. This is a great choice for a late season injection of bold colour into a sunny border that otherwise might be looking past its best at this time of year. Caryopteris Grand Bleu goes well with many other shrubs and perennials including late season flowering ones such as Ceratostigma, Anemone, Helenium or Abelia.

Caryopteris Grand Bleu is a very easy shrub to grow, they are best in full sun and dont like waterlogged winter conditions but otherwise are trouble free and drought tolerant once established.

Caryopteris also make unusual and decorative flowering hedges, we think Grand Bleu is a great candidate for this being compact and upright it would make an informal hedge of 80cm in height including the flowers (so similar to the larger varieties of Lavender hedging plants and enjoying the same growing conditions, but flowering much later to extend the season right into autumn). Perfect for edging a sunny path maybe?

How to grow Caryopteris Grand Bleu

Position: Best in full sun.
Foliage: Deciduous, loses leaves in autumn and fresh new leaves appear in spring.
Soil and site: Any soil that does not waterlog in winter
Flowering time: from august well into autumn
Growth rate: slow/moderate
Ultimate height and spread: 80cm tall x 50-60cm wide
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Aftercare: Water regularly after planting and through the first season until established. Prune hard in spring to remove the old flowering stems. For best results apply a mulch at the same time.
