Caryopteris Hint of Gold (Caryopteris X clandonensis Hint of Gold)

A new variety of Caryopteris, new shrubs come and go but some really are just brilliant – and this is one of them!

All Caryopteris are ideal for extending the season when many other plants are long past their best. Hint of Gold gives a double hit of colour with richly coloured yellow green pointed leaves (like all Caryopteris they are aromatic). The cobalt blue flowers start to appear from August in fluffy clusters along and at the tips of the upright branches giving an inspired contrast with the colourful foliage. These shrubs are magnets for pollinating insects and will be found buzzing with bees and butterflies when in flower.

Caryopteris Hint of Gold is a compact and bushy variety, perfect for adding colour to borders and beds and they are well suited to larger pots on a sunny patio where these easy going, easy to grow shrubs will give many months of colour through the seasons. Once well established they are very drought tolerant.

With its display of both foliage and flowers, this useful little shrub would also make a great decorative hedge, by planting 3 plants per metre an informal late flowering hedge of 70-90cm (high and wide) could be created within just a few seasons and maintained with a single hard prune early each spring.

How to grow Caryopteris Hint of Gold

Position: Best in full sun.
Foliage: Deciduous, loses leaves in autumn and fresh new leaves appear in spring.
Soil and site: Any soil that does not waterlog in winter
Flowering time: from august well into autumn
Growth rate: slow/moderate
Ultimate height and spread: 90cm tall x 90cm wide
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Aftercare: Water regularly after planting and through the first season until established. Prune hard in spring to remove the old flowering stems. For best results apply a mulch at the same time.
