Ceanothus Skylark
A bushy mound forming evergreen Ceanothus, Skylark is smaller and more compact and possibly the best for a moderately sized flowering hedge. Ceanothus Skylark also makes a great wall shrub for a sunny South or West situation (trained on a trellis or a framework of wires to support) and they look great in sunny mixed borders or to soften the edge of a paved area where their glossy foliage can be allowed to spill over.
Ceanothus Skylark produces masses of thimble shaped bright blue flowers during May and June held above the small glossy bright green foliage, like other spring flowering Ceanothus this plant makes a useful foil for the bright flowers and foliage of other later season plants when it has finished flowering.
All Ceanothus appreciate full sun and well drained soil in a sheltered spot, away from cold and drying winds.
Ceanothus Skylark is a good plant for an unusual flowering hedge if you have a sheltered garden, plant 2-3 plants per metre in good well drained soil and the young shrubs will develop quite quickly to create a beautiful feature within a few seasons. This variety may be maintained as a hedge of 100-150cm needing little attention other than a trim after flowering.
