Euonymus japonicus El Dorado (Japanese Spindle)
A cracking new dwarf variety of Euonymus japonicus, El Dorado has very striking, completely golden foliage on a compact and bushy plant that only grows to 60cm high and little more than 25cm wide. The older foliage is a paler yellow colour but always inconspicuous under the bright gold of the new leaves, this plant is just perfect for brightening any corner of the garden that needs an injection of year round colour.
Use Euonymus El Dorado for the front of borders, the bright colour will contrast against other plants, they look immaculate all year making a great container plant to cheer up patios and window boxes. We think the most exciting potential though would be as a bright golden low hedging plant – of all the golden hedge species this is our new favourite! The plants always seem to stand out on the nursery, in all seasons and with a naturally upright habit El Dorado would be easier and quicker than many of the Euonymus fortunei varieties to grow into the required shape. At a final height of 40-60cm this would be perfect as a path edging or mixed into a larger formal design with other low hedging plants of different colours. For a hedge we would recommend 3-5 plants per metre.
Euonymus japonicus is a tough and easy plant to grow, they succeed in all soil types but dislike waterlogging in Winter. Grow them in full sun or partial shade, they will grow in deeper shade but like many plants with colourful foliage the colours can become dull in the absence of significant sun. This is also a great seaside plant.
