Flowering Currant Somerset White (Ribes sanguineum Somerset White)
Flowering Currant is a popular plant and a common sight in British gardens, white flowered types like this magnificent variety are much more unusual. Ribes sanguineum Somerset White is a fabulous new variety with bushy, branching growth that bears many pendent clusters of attractive pure white flowers during April and May. Like other types of flowering currant the mid-deep green foliage is fragrant, especially when crushed. This is a tough and reliable deciduous shrub that is easy to establish and grow. Like many early season shrubs the flowers are a valuable source of nectar for pollinating insects. Flowering Currant Somerset White looks great underplanted with smaller Spring flowering plants.
This is a great plant for a shrub border, they are drought tolerant and put up with quite a lot of shade making it useful for lifting dark corners of the garden early in the season. This is also a good plant for informal hedges and screens, by planting 2-3 plants per metre a moderately sized hedge can be grown within a few seasons and will bring colour and interest for many years to come.
Ribes Somerset White is suitable for all soil types, they do well in poorer soils too but dislike winter waterlogging so poorly drained areas are best avoided (although we do have many other hedging plants suitable for wet sites). When planting Flowering Currant shrubs we recommend adding Rootgrow to the planting holes to give them the very best start in your garden.
