Forsythia spectabilis (Forsythia X intermedia Spectabilis)
This popular deciduous shrub is a true harbinger of Spring, the bare branches are clothed with the familiar bright golden yellow flowers from early March onwards. As the flowers fade the new bright green leaves emerge, taking on a hint of red before falling in late Autumn.
Forsythia spectabilis is a very hardy and easily grown shrub that does well in all types of soil, in sun or partial shade. Good drainage is advisable but otherwise this plant is tough and reliable choice. Use them as back of border shrubs where height is required or as a colorful and trouble free informal hedge or screen.
Forsythis Spectabilis hedges are best planted using 3 plants per metre and will quickly develop into an attractive screening feauture that needs little maintenance other than an annula triim after flowering each Spring to keep them in good order. When planting a new Forsythia Spectabilis hedge we recommend adding rootgrow to the planting holes to give them the best start.
