Fuchsia Magellanica Riccartonii Hedging

Fuchsia magellanica Riccartonii (Hardy Fuchsia)

This is the original, old fashioned hardy Fuchsia with the small and delicate ballerina flowers of scarlet and dark purple that appear continuously from June right through until October, held amongst attractive bronzy dark green foliage. This is a bushy growing shrub and potentially the largest (and toughest) of our Hardy Fuchsia varieties growing up to 2 metres or more in milder localities.

The Hardy Fuchsia magellanica Riccartonii has all kinds of uses, add them to a shrub or mixed border where there foliage and flower colour will bring interest all season long, or plant them in a generous sized container (our plants are already well established in 2 litre pots, not little rooted cuttings in plugs) for a prize specimen that will look great on a patio or terrace. Like all of our Fuchsia varieties this also makes a delightful  flowering hedge of 150-200cm, simply plant 3-4 plants per metre and our strong bushy plants will soon develop to make a fantastic hedge feature or screen in your garden.

Fuchsia magellanica Riccartonii grow well out in the garden in any good well drained soil, these are hardy shrubs but a cold winter and hard frosts may well kill of the top growth back to ground level, new growth will emerge from the base in Spring, probably even stronger than before. This is not something to be disheartened about, the most important thing is to get a strong and healthy root system established from which the new growths will emerge. As we can never predict what kind of Winter is in store each year, we recommend pruning Hardy Fuchsia magellanica Riccartonii shrubs in the spring, even if the top does get killed off over Winter, it will still provide useful protection for the crown of the plant and is best left in situ until the longer, warmer days return.

Like all Hardy Fuchsias, Riccartonii does very well by the sea.
