The Portuguese Laurel Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’ is one of our most popular evergreen hedging species. This versatile plant offers year-round privacy and is suitable for hedges of most sizes – from around 90cm up to several metres. This indispensable Laurel hedging has received the Royal Horticultural Society award of garden merit (AGM) having been judged as an outstanding plant for garden use.
Portuguese Laurel is the toughest and hardiest variety of Laurel, more so than Cherry Laurels, and so we recommend this variety for hedges in colder and more exposed situations.
Portuguese Laurels have deep green polished evergreen leaves that are oval shaped with red leaf stalks, we grow and sell the ‘Angustifolia’ variety that has smaller, neater leaves and is the most suitable variety for a formal evergreen hedge.
Untrimmed plants will produce clusters of small white scented flowers in early summer that develop into small red fruits that eventually ripen to dark purple and are popular with birds.
Portuguese laurels are easy to grow, they will succeed in both full sun and partial or full shade. They are suitable for any soil type provided it doesn’t become waterlogged in wet spells.
This plant is the only member of the hedging laurel family that grows perfectly well in thin chalky soils (where cherry laurels tend to become pale and unhealthy).
On this page, you can find all our potted Portuguese Laurel hedging plants. We usually have a wide range of sizes from small starter plants in 9cm pots through to tall established bushy plants up to 200cm tall.
Our recommended planting density can be found next to the photo for each size, these are just guidelines, you can plant further apart if you are patient and don’t mind the hedge taking a little longer to fill out.
We offer generous quantity discounts and delivery is free on orders over £50 (ex VAT).
