Golden Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium ‘Aureum’) is a very colourful variety of Privet, the oval shaped dark green leaves are edged with a broad golden yellow edging and the leaves are often retained during the winter months. More so if the winter weather is not too harsh especially in the shelter of more suburban gardens.
Golden Privet is a semi-evergreen hedge, on exposed sites and during cold snaps some leaves can fall but the hedge will always re leaf fairly early the following spring.
The leaves of older Golden Privet hedges can be completely yellow and substantially smaller than on younger more vigorous plants, especially on poorer soil. This is still Golden Privet, Ligustrum ovalifolium ‘Aureum’ and is not a different variety, if you are replacing or extending part of an older existing hedge they will match in eventually.
Golden Privet is a very popular hedge, especially for smaller town gardens, it will grow in just about any soil (including poor soil conditions and chalky soils) that are not extremely wet.
It is suited to all situations from full shade to full sun and is a good choice on exposed windy sites including coastal gardens.
They have a moderate growth rate of around 30cm per year, and can be kept tidy with an annual trim at any time of year, twice a year for a very neat manicured look.
Pot grown Golden Privet hedge plants are available in a wide range of sizes from smaller and more economical plants, to much taller stock in large pot sizes for instant effect.
Planting distance is ultimately a matter of personal preference, budget and patience.
To help we do give recommended planting densities per metre of hedge and you can use the calculator to work out quantities (tick the ‘double row’ box for a staggered double row hedge, this will require 50% more plants but gives a lovely dense hedge more quickly).
