Skimmia japonica Rubella
This is the well known and popular Skimmia growing into a steadily increasing mound of deep green evergreen foliage. The dark red flower buds come to prominence during the Autumn and provide welcome colour right through the winter months before finally opening to creamy coloured flowers in spring. A very useful shrub to cheer the garden in winter, and still looks tidy and smart when out of bud or flower.
Skimmia Rubella is often used in winter containers because it has such a long season of interest, they make excellent shrubs for beds and borders bringing structure to the garden, especially useful for cheering up shadier areas. Planted in a row this makes a great little rounded or low formal hedge up to approx 100cm in height and needing little maintenance once established.
Skimmia japonica Rubella prefers a moist but well drained acid soil and will grow in sun or shade. If you have a more alkaline soil this can be improved by adding some ericaceous compost, or of course growing them in containers. They are a hardy and resilient plant suitable for both coastal and inland planting.
