Thuja plicata ‘Atrovirens’ or the Western Red Cedar are great hedging plants, growing up to 60 cm each year. They cover an area fast but without growing out of control. Keep them at any size as a hedge from 150cm up to several metres with just a single trim each Autumn to keep them neat. (Trim twice a year for a really formal, sharp look).
Thuja Plicata ‘Atrovirens’ hedges have a very useful characteristic which aren’t often seen with conifer hedges (with the exception of Yew). They will grow back from the old wood if pruned hard, Thuja hedges may be substantially reduced in height and width without brown dead foliage being permanently visible. Unlike the Green Leylandii, therefore the Thuja is an excellent substitute for a Leylandii hedge.
Thuja hedging plants have unique, distinctive foliage, on closer examination the tiny leaves are arranged in symmetrical flattened sprays, almost like tiny fans, crush the foliage gently and they give off a pleasing pineapple/pear drop scent.
The foliage is a rich glossy emerald green, during the winter months (especially during cold weather) the plants take on more bronze-green hues. The richer green returning with the new growth in spring.
Thuja hedges are tough and hardy, one of the least fussy evergreen hedges growing well in all soil types and most situations, their only real dislike is waterlogged soil.
Pot grown Thuja plicata ‘Atrovirens’ hedging plants are available all year round, and because of this, there is no root disturbance when planting them out, meaning any time of year is suitable for planting. The beauty of having these hedges grown in pots is that they can be expected to establish quickly and easily.
We have a complete range of Thuja plants from economical starter plants in 9cm pots, right through to bushy specimen hedging plants of 2 metres or more.
Planting distance is a matter of personal choice and your budget, our recommended planting density is given for each size but these are only guidelines, you can of course plant further apart and with a little extra patience they will grow together making a fine Thuja hedge.
