English Yew or Taxus Baccata is one of the classic ‘English’ hedging plants that’s perfectly suited to hedges and topiary specimens of all sizes, especially in formal gardens and designs. It has small deep green foliage (the new growth is lighter) that trims neatly, a yew hedge brings valuable structure and formality to the garden all year round.
It is an easy plant to grow – provide it with good drainage and this tough native conifer will tolerate anything. It will even tolerate exposed sites in any soil type and any situation whether it is in full sun or full shade.
Older Yew plants and hedges will produce colourful red fruits which like every other part of the plant, are poisonous to stock and humans but are popular with birds.
English Yew hedging plants are suitable for all sizes of hedges, from low decorative or formal hedges of just 30cm, up to much larger hedges and screens of several metres, that can be trimmed into any shape, ideally in autumn.
Many gardeners will tell you that Yew is very slow growing, while this may be true of the very old plants and trees often seen in churchyards, younger hedges can make 30cm or more of new growth each year especially with good soil preparation and aftercare. Even smaller Yew plants will give some degree of coverage within a few years with just a little patience.
Our bare root Yew hedging is available during the dormant winter season from November until April which is the right time to plant. This is the most economical way to purchase Yew hedging, as they are grown in our fields with the savings reflected in our prices.
Planting density is very much a matter of personal preference, as a general rule, 3 plants per metre is adequate although you can space them further apart. With a little extra patience they will knit together to make a fine hedge, it just takes a little longer. For a really majestic thick Yew hedge try a double row (this uses around 50% more plants with 2-2.5 plants per metre in each of the rows which should be spaced around 45cm apart).
Delivery of our bare root Yew hedging plants is free on all orders over £50 (ex VAT) and we offer good quantity discounts for larger orders.
