Multistem Himalayan Birch Trees are tough and easy to grow, they will tolerate almost any soil conditions and exposed sites in full sun or just a touch of shade. This is a moderately fast growing tree when young, slowing and filling out with age attaining a height of around 8 metres after 20 years.

Multistem Himalayan Birch trees are deciduous and have mid green foliage during the summer months, this turns to hues of yellow in Autumn before the leaves fall revealing the full beauty of the stunning white bark.

Multistem Himalayan Birch Trees or Betula Utilis Jacquemontii from the family Betulaceae is a native as the name suggests of the Himalayan mountains and first by botanists in the 1820’s in Nepal. The centre part of the latin name ‘utilis’ refers to the fact that there are several uses for different components of the tree for instance the thin white bark was for centuries and still is in some parts of the world such as India used as paper as it can be peeled off in large pieces. Our multistemmed trees can be planted as single ornamental specimens or in groups for greater effect in displaying the brilliant white bark. In their natural habitat up to 4500 metres above sea level they can form forests with other trees supporting an undergrowth of shrubs such as evergreen Rhododendrons.

Other than the paper already mentioned the bark of Jacquemontii Birch is used in roof construction and packaging and the timber also in construction although mainly for firewood to the detriment of some of the forests in its natural habitat. Certain parts of the Himalayan Birch are also used in local herbal medicine

Grown as either a shrub or a tree Betula Utilis Jacquemontii can reach ultimate heights of 12 metres or more and can look stunning when planted in groups. It is a very hardy deciduous plant, surviving as it does in the heady heights of the Himalayas thus it is happiest in an area of well drained but moist soil coping with chalk, clay, sand or loam. The narrow pale green leaves appear in spring along with male and female catkins, the foliage fading to yellow in autumn before falling.
