Cheals weeping cherry tree Prunus ‘Kidu Shidare Zakura’
The Cheals Weeping Cherry tree or Prunus kidu shidare zakura to give it its full title is a delightful very small ornamental Cherry tree perfect for planting in smaller gardens or tucking into a corner to give a focal point in a larger flower bed. This variety is particularly popular as it will slowly grow to a maximum of 3 metres by 3 metres over some 20 years which also makes it suitable for planting into pots or containers for impact and colour on the patio
Hailing originally from Japan it made its first appearance in Europe in the early 1900’s and has been immensely popular ever since. The Cheals Weeping small tree has so much to offer the young leaves are bronzy when they emerge then in spring turn a vibrant red, in the summer months they are a pale green and change again in autumn to a yellow/burnt orange colour. The graceful weeping branches have a profusion of lightly scented double candy pink flowers in late spring attracting bees and other insects.
Cheals Weeping cherry trees are very beautiful and are also hardy. They will tolerate both sheltered and exposed sites but do prefer full sun.They like moist but well drained soil but do not care for being planted in very wet or chalky soils. Tolerant of pollution adds another tick to the many attributes of this wonderful small tree.
Our Cheals Weeping Cherries are available as one year old bare root ‘maiden trees’ (available when dormant from November until March)or bushier 2 year old trees sold in 10 litre pots for planting at any time of year.
