Chitalpa Summer Bells Chitalpa x tashkentensis ‘summer Bells’ (Desert willow)
A small deciduous tree that has arisen as an unusual hybrid between Catalpa and Chilopsis to produce a delightful new plant with profuse and rather exotic bright green narrow leaves (rather like a willow – where the common name derives). During the summer months many clusters of orchid like frilly light pink flowers appear, opening in succession, each with a yellow throat and attractive darker maroon markings. In Autumn the leaves turn to an attractive yellow before falling. An unusual variety that is heat resistant and easy to grow, any well drained soil in full sun. A super little Summer flowering tree that won’t get much taller than 5 metres after many years making it a good tree for a smaller garden.
