Buddleja Shrubs

Buddleja (Butterfly Bush, Buddleia)

These hardy and easy to grow shrubs will be familar to many gardeners, they are staples of the mixed or shrub border and wildlife garden. Wherever they are planted they are sure to be very popular with butterflies and many other species of beneficial insects as the fragrant flowers of most varieties are rich in nectar.

The more ‘traditional’ varieties such as Black Knight, Pink Delight, Royal Red, white Profusion and Lochinch are all larger and fast growing shrubs. We also stock a good range of the newer and more compact varieties that are well suited to smaller gardens.

Buddlejas are versatile and easy to grow shrubs, all varieties are deciduous and so plants delivered in Winter will have lost their leaves, but fresh new ones will appear in Spring. Buddleja shrubs are renowned colonising plants, self-seeded plants are often seen on railway embankments and even growing out of walls but don’t let that put you off. These fast growing shrubs make a great addition to borders and wildlife gardens where there prolific flower heads will be a magnet for many species of beneficial insects, especially butterflies.

Buddleja grows best in full sun or partial shade and in any soil that doesn’t become waterlogged in winter. For best results, the shrubs should be hard pruned in March each year, right back to three or four buds. This will keep the shrubs bushy and attractive in shape and maintain a manageable size while encouraging the maximum number of flowers each season.
