Grow Lespedeza thunbergii shrubs in any well drained soil in full sun, they are an easy and low maintenance plant that needs little more than a hard prune early each spring to remove the previous seasons top growth.
Lespedeza thunbergii (also known as Thunbergs Bush Clover) is a handsome deciduous shrub that develops arching stems clothed in pointed oval clover like leaves borne in threes. From late summer through to Autumn a cascade of colourful rosy purple flowers appear from the branch tips. One of the best Autumn flowering shrubs that comes into its own when many other shrubs and flowers are well past their best, Lespedeza thunbergii is a worthy recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. (AGM).
Technically this is a woody based perennial or ‘Sub Shrub’ – perfectly hardy down to at least -15C but the top growth usually dies back to the base in Winter and new shoots emerge from the base the following Spring. (similar to a Hardy Fuchsia, if you take delivery in the depths of Winter please dont be disheartened by a pot full of dead looking sticks, they will grow as the days lengthen!) 1.5 mx 2.5m.
