Flowering generously from early summer into late summer, Campanula portenschlagiana creates a vibrant carpet of colour that softens edges, spills beautifully over walls and containers, and brightens even the smallest garden spaces. The nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, adding valuable wildlife interest to the garden.
Campanula portenschlagiana is exceptionally versatile and well suited to rock gardens, alpine beds, gravel gardens, paving gaps and the front of sunny or partially shaded borders. Its trailing habit allows it to cascade attractively over retaining walls and raised beds, while its dense growth helps suppress weeds and provides excellent ground cover. The vibrant purple flowers combine beautifully with silver-leaved plants, alpines and other low-growing perennials, creating eye-catching displays throughout the summer months.
Easy to grow and remarkably resilient, Campanula portenschlagiana thrives in well-drained soil and performs well in both full sun and partial shade. Once established, it requires very little maintenance and will gradually spread to form attractive colonies. Light trimming after flowering can help keep plants compact and encourage fresh growth, while established clumps can be divided every few years if required.

As a rough guide when planting Campanula portenschlagiana as ground cover or along border edges, allow 7-9 plants per square metre for good coverage, or plant in groups to create attractive drifts of vibrant summer colour. We recommend adding Rootgrow when planting to give your new plants the best start.
