Bare root hedge plants are typically characterised by a strong stem, with a large and strong root system underneath the plant. The height of these hedging plants will vary depending on the species and age, but they typically range from 20/30cm up to 175/200cm in height when delivered to our customers. You may wonder how these bare plants, without any leaves whatsoever, will survive during winter. These plants are designed to be extremely economical, and when planted correctly they will thrive in the spring.
We have a large variety of hedging plants available as bare root, that comes in a wide range of species and plant sizes. These can include , hornbeam hedges, common dogwood hedges, hazel hedges and more. To see the full list of bare root hedging on offer, take a look at our product range above. If you’re unsure which type would be most suitable for your garden, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
We stock a huge variety of bare-root hedges to suit all requirements and budgets, where they are available to buy anytime from November to April. This is because they can only be removed from the ground when they’re hibernating and dormant to avoid damage. Our bare root hedging is supplied directly from our 50-acre family-run nursery. We care for each individual plant, tending to any specific needs it may have, giving it the best start in life, so we can provide you with the best quality plants.
Bare root hedging plants are by far the most economical and environmentally responsible way to establish a new hedge due to the smaller number of inputs required for the crop. (They dont need pots or compost and they are lighter/easier to transport). A small number of failures is inevitable and is an accepted part of using bare root plants, with our top quality stock we would expect this number to be well under 5% provided they are cared for and planted into prepared soil. If you intend to slit plant, or are planting into less than ideal soil, dont water them in the first season or allow grass/weeds to grow around them, then the failure rate will almost certainly be higher. Extra plants may be required for ‘gapping up’ the following season but their cost is offset by lower planting, preparation and maintenance costs.
We always recommend preparing and planting your new hedge as well as you possibly can and only doing it once, (we will send full, straightforward guidance with your order or you can view it here) this is an investment that will be repaid with the overwhelming majority of the plants being succesful and they will grow into a hedge more quickly. We would always suggest ordering a handful of extra plants and putting them in the corner of a vegetable patch or flower bed. This should yield more than enough ‘spares’ to fill the occasional gap that comes to light.
Planting Bare Root Hedging Successfully
When it comes to planting these hedges, the density to which you plant them is completely up to you, based on the desired effect you would like and your budget. For most smaller sizes we would suggest planting a double, staggered row, with five to seven plants in each (Although you can see our recommended planting density for each size of plant next to the product photo).
