Lonicera is an evergreen shrub commonly used for hedging and often referred to as hedging honeysuckle or box honeysuckle. It is native to China and can be found growing alongside rivers and streams up to 3,000 metres. It is also hardy to temperatures as low as -15c.
The Lonicera Nitida Elegant is a more compact variety making an excellent smaller evergreen hedge which can be clipped as a low edging to bed or border. Although a member of the honeysuckle family it bears no relation to the growth or habits of that plant in fact grows in such a manner that it can be trimmed into topiary shapes. If left untrimmed it can produce creamy white flowers in spring followed by inedible blue/purple berries enjoyed by wildlife.
Suitable for sun or shaded areas and although considered hardy does not enjoy cold exposed sites. It will grow in any reasonable soil and can even be grown as ground cover. With a growth rate of 20-30cm per year we recommend planting 3-5 plants per metre for hedging to be grown to a height of 50-150cm or as ground cover we would recommend 4-6 plants per square metre. Trimming can take place in spring, summer or autumn.
Sold as bare root plants from November until April when they are dormant this is the most economical way to purchase these plants. We offer generous quantity discounts and delivery is free on orders over £50 (ex VAT).
