ALDER,GREY, ALNUS INCANA- HEDGING AND YOUNG TREES

The Grey alder (Alnus incana) is a fast growing medium sized deciduous tree. Like all Alders (link- to Alder) the Grey Alder will grow and thrive in virtually any soil, it is equally tolerant of dry polluted sites and damp or waterlogged conditions where few other trees will grow. Alders are frequently seen as the first colonising trees in harsh environments, the Grey Alder is the most tolerant and are frequently used to prevent soil erosion and for land reclamation, especially on poorer soils which may be enriched by means of Nitrogen fixing bacteria into its root nodules. The Grey alder (Alnus incana) is the most tolerant and accommodating member of the Alder family.

Like Common Alder (link-common alder hedging) the Grey Alder has elongated male catkins that appear in early spring, the female catkins are much shorter and mature into false cones containing the seeds which ripen in late autumn and are popular with small birds.

The Grey Alder has attractive ovate mid green leaves that are more pointed than those of the Common Alder and have silver-grey underside, older trees have smooth grey bark.

Grey Alders are suitable for hedges, windbreaks and screens of 6ft upwards and should be planted 2ft (60cm) apart. Trim in late summer.

All plants are covered by our guarantee and we will supply full cultural instructions with your order. We strongly recommend Rootgrow and Bonemeal to help establish newly planted trees, these may found on the left hand menu.
