BERBERIS THUNBERGII ATROPURPUREA-BERBERIS THUNBERGII ATROPURPUREA HEDGE, PURPLE BERBERIS
Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea or Purple Berberis forms a dense prickly barrier and is one of the best shrubs for a smaller security hedge, either on its own or mixed with Green Berberis (-link). The rounded leaves emerge greenish purple in spring before turning rich purple during the summer and brilliant red before falling in autumn. Small orange yellow flowers appear in spring and develop into elongated glossy red ‘Barberries’ in autumn that appear to drop from the prickly branches complementing the red foliage. This is one of the best deciduous shrubs for autumn colour.
Like other Berberis(-link HGN/ Berberis) Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea is easily grown in any soil that does not become waterlogged. The most difficult part of growing a Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea hedge is planting it, thick gloves are essential! It will grow successfully on windy exposed sites and in shade.
Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea hedges make excellent intruder proof barriers and can be maintained easily by trimming in late spring after flowering. In reasonable soil Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea will grow up to 1ft (30cm) per year.
We recommend Purple Berberis hedges are planted 18 inches (45cm) apart this will produce a dense prickly boundary hedge that acts as a formidable barrier.
All plants are covered by our guarantee and we will supply full cultural instructions with your order. We strongly recommend Rootgrow and Bonemeal to help establish newly planted trees, these may found on the left hand menu.
