Berberis Stenophylla (Berberis x Stenophylla) is a hybrid variety of evergreen Berberis with two parents of different species. Having Berberis darwinii (-link) as one of these parents Berberis Stenophylla is a very prickly plant with a similar constitution, a tough and versatile ‘all round’ evergreen shrub.
The foliage is tough and leathery, tiny narrow deep green leaves are studded in clusters in graceful arching branches. Berberis Stenophylla is a very prickly plant with thorns on the ends of the leaves and on the stems.
The arching stems are wreathed with masses of tiny rich yellow goblet shaped flowers in spring. The flowers are scented and a more intermittent second flush is sometimes produced in the autumn. The fruits or ‘Barberries’ develop through the summer from green to purple-blue by autumn they are edible with a sharp acidic flavour.
Berberis Stenophylla is a very tough and hardy evergreen shrub and will grow reliably in any reasonable well drained soil including chalk and clay. It is well suited to coastal gardens and will grow in shade although the quality of both foliage and flowers will be much better in full sun.
When grown as a shrub Berberis Stenophylla has a dense rounded habit, it is multi stemmed and therefore excellent for informal hedges and screens making a very effective intruder proof boundary.
For a new Berberis Stenophylla hedge we recommend planting 18-24 ins (45-60cm) apart, it can be maintained at any height from 5-10ft (1.5-3m) by trimming after flowering. When used for hedging Berberis Stenophylla is reasonable fast growing at 1ft (30cm) or more per year.
