Giving your plants the best start.
Every order that we deliver is accompanied by our comprehensive and easy to follow planting guide. Preparing your planting area thoroughly is important for the best results, here are the most important parts of our advice:
Plant problems – what to do, how and when to contact us.
Sometimes, despite all our hard work things do go wrong. We only despatch strong healthy plants but even the best Hopes Grove plants can look a little below par until they get fully established. Sometimes they can even fail – but don’t worry, we have you covered!
The most important thing is to establish what is going wrong and causing your plants to look off colour or worse, and then use our comprehensive nursery experience to find the solution. To help us provide this advice we ask you to email us with the following information:
What happens next?
Once we have confirmed your order details and looked at the photos, we will be in touch to advise you on the next steps. In many cases plants can be saved and in time will recover back to full health with the correct care. Sometimes we will confirm that plants have failed, and that they will be replaced – providing that we can see in your photos that they have been planted in suitable conditions and properly cared for.
While issues with potted plants (that suffer no root disturbance) are very rare, we do sometimes see issues with bare root and root balls in Spring and early summer. By the very nature of these plants, they have suffered a greater root disturbance from being lifted and replanted. In the first Spring after planting they can take longer to break dormancy and sprout leaves (which they will not do until the roots start to grow first). For example – an established Beech hedge in your neighbours garden may come into leaf in April but newly planted bare roots may well take another month or even six weeks before coming into leaf. Evergreen plants in particular can moult many leaves that have become discoloured first, brown patches can occur and parts of the branches may even die back. Drying winds combined with a lack of rainfall in March and April can make this more common and the plants can look in a sorry state at times. (At times like this it is critical that the plants are kept adequately watered, kept weed free and mulched – you can find the detail in our watering guide and planting instructions ) This is all normal and a characteristic of bare root and root ball plants, as the roots become established new growth will follow and by mid summer. While we are of course always pleased to offer advice at any time, we do not determine guarantee claims for seasonal plants until the end of June after planting so the plants have a fair chance of getting re-established (which usually happens).
When we replace seasonal plants like bare roots or root balls, they will be available at the beginning of the next planting season. We will replace the failed plants with plants of the same species, size, and age. Replacement plants are offered free of charge (provided that the original ones were properly cared for), all that we will ask for is our usual delivery contribution for the size of plant that we are replacing (regardless of the replacement plant value).
We realise that planting a new hedge can be a significant investment in both time and money, our guaranteed to grow promise allows you to order with confidence. Replacement plants are offered in good faith and in the presumption that you have provided suitable growing conditions, whether or not this can be fully ascertained from the photos you send us. We do not offer refunds as an alternative to replacement plants. We will only supply one set of replacement plants per order. Should the replacement plants that we provide also fail then in our experience the cause is almost certainly soil or site related. We would recommend you consider further site and/or soil investigation to determine the cause of repeated failures.
