Deciduous Azalea ‘Fireball’
This deciduous shrub is a great addition to any garden, the green foliage from spring turns an alternative coppery colour with new younger growth, more prominent in Autumn, the flowers compliment these colours with the large trusses of flame red flowers with the striking yellow stamens covering the plant in the months of May and June, bringing a blaze of colour to any garden in this period.
Height in 10 years- 120 to 150cm
Deciduous Azaleas come alive in late Spring with a profusion of brightly coloured trumpet shaped flowers in a variety of shades, few shrubs produce such a stunning display of colour. If space allows, they are at their best when planted in bold groups and with a mix of varieties. Deciduous Azaleas also produce a second show, their attractive Autumn leaf colours in hues of yellow, orange and red. All Deciduous Azaleas go well with Evergreen Azaleas and Hybrid Rhododendrons.
Although often seen planted in the dappled shade of a woodland setting, these tough plants will succeed in full sun. Deciduous Azaleas are ericaceous plants and so they should have acid soil that is well prepared and free draining. (Check to see if they are growing in nearby gardens if you aren’t sure about your soil). If your soil is alkaline, they can still be enjoyed in your garden if grown in large containers or raised beds filled with Ericaceous compost.
Deciduous Azaleas dislike cultivation immediately around them (their roots are very close to the surface) but they do benefit from a light mulch each Spring to conserve moisture. This will also discourage weeds making these plant both beautiful, and very low maintenance.
