Evergreen Azalea ‘Mothers Day’
A hardy low growing compact evergreen perfect for planting in a border. Small dark green leaves turn a rich shade of bronze in winter giving interest later in the year to the garden. This shrub becomes covered in plush deep red funnel shaped semi double flowers which have a small show of little dark red blotches in late spring and early summer. Planted anywhere it will give a fiery colourful display especially if grouped together.
Height after 10 years – 80-100cm
Evergreen Azaleas produce a tapestry of colour during April and May and come in a wide range of colours, growth is much more compact than that of Hybrid Rhododendrons making these plants a great choice for smaller gardens. If space does allow, they can be very effective planted in bold groups and with a mix of varieties. Evergreen Azaleas have small leaves making them suitable for use as attractive flowering topiary as well as woodland gardens and borders.
Although often seen planted in the dappled shade of a woodland setting, these plants will succeed in full sun in a sheltered spot. Evergreen Azaleas are ericaceous plants and so they should have acid soil that is well prepared and free draining. (Check to see if they are growing in nearby gardens if you aren’t sure about your soil). If your soil is alkaline, they can still be enjoyed in your garden if grown in large containers or raised beds filled with Ericaceous compost.
Evergreen Azaleas dislike cultivation immediately around them (their roots are very close to the surface) but they do benefit from a light mulch each Spring to conserve moisture. This will also discourage weeds making these plant both beautiful, and very low maintenance.
