Carpinus Betulus Frans Fontaine Garden Trees

Carpinus betulus Frans Fontaine (Fastigiate Hornbeam)

Hornbeam hedging has always been a landscape designer’s favourite but perhaps not so well known is Fastigiate hornbeam. A much-underrated elegant, cone-shaped deciduous tree canopied with attractive oval ribbed, fresh green leaves against smooth grey bark. Pretty, dangling green catkins swing in April breezes and since Fastigiate hornbeam is narrow rather than wide, it adapts admirably when space is restricted. Lively autumn foliage fades to rich mustard yellow, often staying on the tree throughout winter and shedding in spring to accommodate new emerging leaves. Planted informally in sweeping lawns or in formal symmetry along driveways, its textured pyramid shape creates enticing avenues, boundaries and vistas.
