Flowering Cherry Autumn Flowering Garden Trees

Autumn flowering Cherry (Prunus subhirtella Autumnalis Rosea)

Commonly known as Pink autumn flowering cherry or Winter flowering cherry, this spectacular small ornamental tree is prized for its winter beauty at a time of year when there is little to rival its dainty blossom. As leaves yellow and drop in autumn, Prunus Autmnalis Rosea quite literally offers you two bites of the cherry as crimson buds burst into life. Bare stems are suddenly smothered in delicate soft pink semi-double petals and continue to flower off and on from November to March when fresh green foliage emerges once again.

Autumn Flowering Cherry

Happy and hardy in any decent well-drained soil in full sun, the Pink autumn flowering cherry is a great asset in the winter landscape when there is little else to rival its pale pink blossom. Mostly trouble-free and low-maintenance, flowering cherries bring a breath of spring to sunny winter gardens including cottage, country, suburban, urban and wildlife gardens. Alternatively, create focal points in long beds, spreading lawns and wildflower meadows. 4-8m x 2.5-4m

Plant our young potted trees at any time of year. Bare root trees should be planted when dormant between November and April. We supply root ball trees from October – May, the correct season for planting. Avoid planting when the ground is excessively wet or frozen. Remember, trees normally reach their ultimate height and spread within 20-50 years depending on species so give it ample growing room.

An unusual problem-free deciduous tree that needs little pruning. Our nursery trees have already been shaped when young so require little attention but you can tidy them up in February or March if needed, removing any unwanted crossed branches or dead, damaged or diseased stems. Some fruit trees including apple, apricot, cherry and plum can suffer from a fungal disease called Silverleaf which makes leaves silver and shrivel and infects the bark which makes twigs and boughs die. Should you spot Silverleaf, delay pruning until July or August when the disease is not so widespread and always use clean sharp secateurs to prevent spreading the disease.
