Flowering Cherry Cheals Weeping Garden Trees

Cheals Weeping Cherry (Prunus Kiku-Shidare-Zakura)

Often known as Cheal’s weeping cherry and arguably one of the prettiest of Japanese ornamental cherries, Prunus Kiku-Shidare-Zakura is a delightful deciduous tree awash with tumbling soft pink blossoms in April attracting beneficial pollinators. Fresh green pointed leaves set off the double-petalled blossoms. Being bred for their flower over fruit, cherries are small and sour so are best left for the birds. The Japanese take blossom-time seriously, celebrating hanami, a century-old event when they gather under the cherry blossom enjoying picnics to celebrate its fleeting blooming season. Being Japan’s national flower even the news channels chart their blossoming period from early March until mid-April whilst Hokkaido in Northern Japan, hundreds of tourists visit annually to witness plum and cherry trees blossoming simultaneously.

Cheals Weeping Cherry

Happy and hardy in any decent well-drained soil in full sun, Cheal’s weeping cherry is both hardy and beautiful and attracts beneficial pollinators. Mostly trouble-free and low-maintenance it is a lovely addition to sunny courtyards, in containers on roof terraces and patios. An ideal choice for country, suburban, urban and wildlife gardens. Alternatively, ornamental cherries create charming focal points in long beds and borders, lawns and wildflower meadows. 2.5-4m x 2.5-4m

Plant our young potted trees at any time of year. Bare root trees should be planted when dormant between November and April. We supply root ball trees from October – May, the correct season for planting. Avoid planting when the ground is excessively wet or frozen. Remember, trees normally reach their ultimate height and spread within 20-50 years depending on species so give it ample growing room.

A beautiful problem-free deciduous tree that needs little pruning but you can tidy them up in February or March if needed by removing any unwanted crossed branches or dead, damaged or diseased stems. Some fruit trees including apple, apricot, cherry and plum can suffer from a fungal disease called Silverleaf which makes leaves silver and shrivel and infects the bark causing twigs and boughs to die. Should you spot Silverleaf, delay pruning until July or August when the disease is not so widespread and always use clean sharp secateurs to prevent spreading the disease.
