Yes, fruit from the Prunus Royal Burgundy is edible to wildlife!
This stunning ornamental garden tree with dark purple foliage and beautiful pink blossoms doesn’t just look lovely in the garden – it’s also a food source for garden birds and pollinators. The fruits are inedible to humans, but birds will definitely enjoy eating them, and the Prunus Royal Burgundy tree also provides them with shelter.
Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’ will thrive in full sun and well drained soil. Once you have found the perfect space for your flowering cherry, dig a hole twice the size of the rootball and plant at the same depth as the rootball so it’s level with the soil around it. Backfill the hole with soil and well rotted organic matter before firming in gently around the base of the tree. Water in well and apply some mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.Â

Potted Prunus can be planted at any time of the year, as long as the ground isn’t waterlogged or frozen. However, autumn and spring tend to be the ideal times as the weather isn’t too cold and roots have plenty of time to establish before the harsh winter or warm summer growth season. Bare root planting should be done between November to March.

Flowering Cherry Royal Burgundy (Prunus Royal Burgundy AGM)
It is not always the exuberant blossoms that set ornamental cherries apart, and in the case of Japanese purple leaf cherry, the foliage is as captivating as the flowers. A lovely spreading tree with rich maroon young leaves that deepen to dark chocolate as the season progresses providing a dramatic backdrop for masses of April blossom when double-petalled rosy flowers explode in joyful profusion. Leaves age to vibrant scarlet hues in autumn before falling as winter nips.
